Cybersecurity researchers have identified a sophisticated ClickFix campaign targeting macOS users, involving over 250 domains that utilize browser fingerprinting to selectively deliver malware. This technique enables attackers to evade detection by security tools and sandboxes, presenting malicious content only to specific users.
ClickFix is a social engineering tactic where users are deceived into executing malicious commands under the guise of resolving non-existent issues. In this campaign, the attackers employ browser fingerprinting—a method that collects data about a user’s browser and device configuration—to determine whether to display a malware lure. This approach helps conceal the malicious content from automated security systems and researchers.
Upon visiting one of these compromised domains, the user’s browser is analyzed for various attributes, including platform type, screen dimensions, and graphics capabilities. If the fingerprinting script identifies the visitor as a genuine macOS user, it serves a fake software download page, often mimicking legitimate applications. The user is then prompted to copy and execute an obfuscated command in the Terminal, which initiates the download and installation of malware.
The malware deployed in this campaign includes MacSync and Atomic Stealer (AMOS), both designed to exfiltrate sensitive information such as credentials, browser data, authentication tokens, cryptocurrency wallets, and personal files. The attackers’ infrastructure is dynamic, with domains frequently changing to avoid detection.
To protect against such threats, users should exercise caution when prompted to execute commands in the Terminal, especially from unverified sources. It’s crucial to verify the authenticity of software downloads and be wary of unexpected prompts to perform system-level actions. Organizations should implement monitoring systems to detect unusual Terminal activity and educate users about the risks associated with social engineering attacks like ClickFix.
