That boosts the total reach to over 300,000 U.S. K–12 faculty and administrators in 100 districts across 30 states.
What Teachers Get, and for How Long
The program, launched in 2025, offers verified U.S. K–12 educators complimentary access to ChatGPT, along with resources and training. Unlike trial perks, this deal stays valid through June 2028. It’s aimed just at teachers, staff, and administrators—not students.
Privacy, Policy & Utility
OpenAI has rolled out a standardized data privacy agreement in 16 states. This legal framework helps school systems quickly assess how the program meets student data protection standards and makes approval processes more consistent. The company emphasizes that its role is supporting the classroom—not replacing educators—so policy decisions stay in educators’ hands.
Alongside the expansion, OpenAI released a new report examining how AI tools, including its own, are being adopted in continuous education settings. It also follows similar efforts by other AI firms: for example, one rival rolled out free educator access to its AI platform last month.
What it means moving forward: with so much tech in classrooms already, this free access pressures schools and districts to update policies for safe, equitable AI use. Teachers who may have hesitated now have fewer barriers to try AI-based lesson planning or grading aids. Still, implementing these tools responsibly will require close coordination between tech providers, school boards, and privacy advocates.
