OnePlus Reportedly Exiting US and European Markets

OnePlus, the smartphone manufacturer known for its high-performance devices at competitive prices, is reportedly planning to withdraw from the United States and European markets. This move is part of a broader restructuring by its parent company, Oppo.

According to sources familiar with the matter, the official announcement could come as early as this week. The restructuring plan also includes Realme, another Oppo-owned brand, which is set to exit the Chinese market. OnePlus’s withdrawal is expected to extend to other regions, including India, by 2027.

In its early years, OnePlus garnered a dedicated following among Android enthusiasts by offering devices that combined solid performance with lightweight software, all at prices significantly lower than competitors like Apple and Samsung. However, in recent years, the company’s influence has diminished. In the U.S., Apple and Samsung continue to dominate the smartphone market, with Apple capturing a record 20% of the global market in the second quarter of 2026, while Samsung held the top spot at 22%. OnePlus, meanwhile, lags behind smaller contenders such as Motorola and Google.

In China, Oppo faces stiff competition from market leaders Huawei and Apple. The broader market is also under strain due to rising memory costs. According to IDC, total smartphone shipments in China fell 4.3% year-over-year in the second quarter to approximately 66 million units, marking the fifth consecutive quarterly decline. Apple and Huawei were the only major vendors to experience growth during this period. The slowdown is attributed to a memory chip shortage that has forced companies like Apple to raise prices across much of their product lineup, with CEO Tim Cook calling the increases “unavoidable.”

Chinese brands like Oppo are under greater pressure than Apple and Samsung due to the memory crunch. Thinner margins leave less room to absorb rising component costs, particularly in the entry-level segment, where costs have jumped 20% to 30% since early 2025.

OnePlus’s most recent flagship, the OnePlus 15, launched globally on November 13, 2025. However, the U.S. sale was postponed due to delays in the FCC certification process, which was backed up following a federal government shutdown that had just ended the day before the launch.

This potential withdrawal from Western markets signifies a significant shift in OnePlus’s strategy. The company, once celebrated for challenging industry giants with its “flagship killer” devices, appears to be refocusing its efforts on markets where it can maintain a competitive edge. For consumers in the U.S. and Europe, this move could lead to reduced competition and fewer choices in the smartphone market, potentially impacting pricing and innovation.
