Apple’s initiative to integrate digital driver’s licenses into the Wallet app is poised to expand to Oklahoma, marking the 15th U.S. state to adopt this feature. This development follows the recent inclusion of Arkansas and Virginia, reflecting a growing trend toward digital identification.
Since its announcement in 2021, Apple’s digital ID program has seen gradual adoption. The current list of participating states includes Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Iowa, Maryland, Montana, New Mexico, North Dakota, Ohio, and West Virginia, along with Puerto Rico. The addition of Oklahoma signifies continued momentum in this area.
To add a driver’s license or state ID to the Wallet app, users can open the app, tap the ‘+’ button, select ‘Driver’s License or State ID,’ and follow the on-screen instructions. This process involves scanning the physical ID and completing a facial recognition step for verification. Once added, the digital ID can be presented at participating TSA checkpoints and select businesses, offering a convenient and secure method of identification.
It’s important to note that while digital IDs provide enhanced privacy—allowing users to share only necessary information, such as age verification without disclosing birthdates or addresses—they do not yet serve as a complete replacement for physical IDs. Users are advised to carry their physical driver’s licenses, as acceptance of digital IDs varies across different institutions and situations.
