Nvidia has announced a $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy, a data center developer affiliated with SoftBank and OpenAI. This strategic move positions Nvidia as the exclusive provider of computing infrastructure for OpenAI’s Ports-Pike data center, located near Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Ports-Pike facility is set to commence operations with an initial capacity of 4.25 gigawatts, with plans to expand up to 8 gigawatts. To support this ambitious growth, Nvidia is offering up to $105 billion in credit to facilitate the construction and scaling of the data center.
SB Energy, backed by investors including SoftBank and OpenAI, is spearheading the development of a 9.2-gigawatt natural gas power plant on the site. This location, owned by the U.S. Department of Energy, has historical significance as a former uranium enrichment facility for the U.S. nuclear arsenal and Navy submarines.
The projected cost for the power plant stands at $33 billion, reflecting the substantial rise in expenses associated with building natural gas facilities. Over the past two years, construction costs for such plants have surged by 66%, according to BloombergNEF. Upon completion, these new power plants will enter a competitive market, contending with export demands that could potentially triple natural gas prices in certain regions.
This investment underscores Nvidia’s commitment to expanding its footprint in the AI infrastructure sector. By securing a pivotal role in the Ports-Pike project, Nvidia not only strengthens its partnership with OpenAI but also positions itself at the forefront of the rapidly evolving AI data center landscape. As the demand for advanced AI capabilities continues to escalate, such strategic collaborations are poised to play a crucial role in shaping the future of AI development and deployment.
