Nothing has officially unveiled Nothing OS 5.0, its Android 17-based software upgrade, set to begin rolling out to users in mid-October. The update introduces a range of visual and functional enhancements: refreshed widgets, new lockscreen clock styles, redesigned camera and gallery tools, a Glyph accessory-app, and deeper AI-feature integration. Open beta access kicks off on August 26, with the full release scheduling across devices through January 2027.
Visual Tweaks, Widgets & UI Polishes
Rather than a complete redesign, Nothing OS 5.0 refines the user interface in several ways. The update replaces the system font, adds animations to status bar indicators (like when changing connection modes), and brings pixel-style blur and transparency effects to home-screen widgets and apps like Gallery. Wallpapers gain depth with new blur effects, and two new lockscreen clock styles plus expanded color theming allow more personalization. In addition, home-screen batch editing tools and new widget offerings—such as “Away Time,” which tracks idle screen time, and “Collector,” for creating sticker-style visuals from photos—add flexibility and fun.

A suite of AI features debuts in this release. “Essential Voice” now gives a live preview while transcribing voice-to-text; “Smart Collections” auto-organizes content within the Essential Space feature; and users can build Essential Apps directly on their device. Quick Settings gets enhanced Bluetooth controls and the option for separate Quick Settings vs. Notification panels. A Yellow indicator warns of active AI privacy usage. Also part of the update: support for Google’s Noto 3D emoji, matching what’s available on newer Pixel phones.
Perhaps the most notable new app is the dedicated Glyph controller—offering a centralized place to manage all of the phone’s Glyph lighting functions. Other upgraded tools include improved album organization in Gallery, fixed-once QR link displays in Camera, and streamlined UI icons.
Roll-Out Timeline & Device Order
The open beta begins on Tuesday, August 26, initially for the Phone (3), then expanding to other supported models over the following weeks. Full stable release starts mid-October for Phone (3), with subsequent launches through early November for models like Phone (4a) Pro, Phone (4a), Phone (3a) Pro, Phone (3a), and Phone (2a) variants. The latest devices—Phone (4b) and CMF Phone 2 Pro—are set to receive the update by mid-January 2027. Interestingly, Phone (4b), the newest handset, is slotted second-to-last in the line.
