Motorola Razr Fold: A Week’s Experience Reveals a Top-Tier Foldable
After years of focusing on flip-style foldables, Motorola has ventured into the book-style foldable market with the Razr Fold. Having used it as my primary device for a week, I can confidently say that the Razr Fold stands out as a premier foldable smartphone.
Design and Build Quality
Despite being Motorola’s inaugural book-style foldable, the Razr Fold exudes a level of refinement that suggests a mature product. Drawing from nearly a decade of experience with the Razr clamshell series, Motorola has crafted a device that feels both robust and sophisticated.
The hinge mechanism is particularly noteworthy. It operates smoothly, offering a springy response without the unsettling noises that plagued earlier Razr models. Opening the device is effortless, and closing it provides a satisfying snap. The display crease, a common concern with foldables, is present but unobtrusive. After a week of use, it’s less pronounced than the crease on my nine-month-old Galaxy Z Fold 7 and comparable to what Samsung’s device exhibited at launch. While not invisible, it’s certainly within acceptable limits.
An ergonomic touch is the slight inward slope on the frame, facilitating easier opening of the device.
Stylus Integration
A standout feature is the inclusion of the Pen Ultra stylus, a functionality absent in some competitors. Although my personal use of the stylus has been limited, it performs adequately for tasks like note-taking and sketching. The accompanying case, albeit somewhat bulky, surpasses the offerings from other manufacturers in terms of design and utility.

While this design choice can be slightly inconvenient when the device is placed on a flat surface, it doesn’t detract significantly from the overall user experience.
Battery Life and Charging
One of the most impressive aspects is the substantial 6,000 mAh battery housed within the Razr Fold. This capacity translates to exceptional battery life. In contrast to the frequent charging required by my Galaxy Z Fold 7, the Razr Fold comfortably lasts a full day under heavy usage. With 4-6 hours of screen time, I often end the day with approximately 45% battery remaining. This endurance occasionally allows me to skip nightly charging, relying instead on a quick top-up the following morning. The device supports rapid wired charging, though wireless charging can be inconsistent due to the camera bump affecting alignment on some charging pads.
Software Experience
Motorola’s approach to software on the Razr Fold is commendable. The user interface retains the clean and intuitive feel reminiscent of earlier Android versions, complemented by Motorola’s signature gestures like twist-to-camera and chop-to-flashlight. The foldable-specific features strike a balance between the offerings of Pixel and Samsung devices. Notably, the implementation of Android 16’s 90:10 app split allows users to have three apps in a Rolodex-style rotation for swift access—a particularly ingenious addition.
Powered by the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor (not the Elite variant), the Razr Fold delivers robust performance with efficient heat management, outperforming some current flagships in this regard.
Camera Performance
The camera system is perhaps the most surprising highlight. Equipped with three 50MP rear cameras, the Razr Fold captures crisp and vibrant images. The main sensor produces detailed shots with appealing color reproduction, while the telephoto lens extends the device’s photographic capabilities without compromising quality. This marks a significant improvement over the smaller sensors used in previous Razr flip phones and the mid-range sensors found in other Motorola devices.
Market Position and Pricing
It’s important to contextualize the Razr Fold’s standing in the market. Based on my experience, it emerges as a leading foldable option, particularly within the U.S. market. While competitors like the Oppo Find N6 or Honor Magic V6 offer their own advantages, the Razr Fold holds its ground firmly stateside.
In the U.S., the Razr Fold competes favorably against devices like the Pixel 10 Pro Fold, offering superior battery life, performance, sleek hardware, and enhanced camera capabilities. It also challenges the Galaxy Z Fold 7, surpassing it in camera quality and battery longevity. While performance and hardware comparisons are closer, the Razr Fold remains a strong contender.
Priced at $1,899, the Razr Fold is positioned competitively. Considering Motorola’s history of offering substantial discounts, a reduced price point of $1,599 or even $1,699 would make it an undeniable choice for those seeking a foldable device in the U.S. market.
Reflecting on my week with the Razr Fold, it’s evident that Motorola has delivered a compelling product. The device’s strengths are so pronounced that identifying significant drawbacks is challenging. This positive experience underscores the Razr Fold’s potential as a leading foldable smartphone.
