Microsoft 365 Outage Persists into Day Two, Signs of Recovery Emerge

Microsoft’s multi-service outage entered its second day as affected users continued to deal with disruptions to Outlook email, authentication hiccups, and other Microsoft 365 tools. The company confirmed progress has been made but warned the fix is not yet complete.

The outage stemmed from a misconfigured core authentication setup used across multiple Microsoft 365 services. The issue prevented certain authentication components from deploying correctly to parts of Microsoft’s infrastructure. As a result, besides Outlook, services including SharePoint, Teams, Universal Print, Defender XDR, the Microsoft 365 Admin Center, Copilot, and Purview were also severely affected.

How Microsoft Is Fixing It

Monday’s efforts focused on pinpointing which recent changes might have caused the misconfiguration, running tests, and rolling out mitigation steps. Over time, these fixes have begun to ease the load, especially for Outlook users: mail flow has started improving.

By late Monday (around 10 p.m. ET), improvements in mail flow were evident, though Outlook’s search functionality remained degraded. The search issues showed signs of recovery only after 3 a.m. ET on Tuesday. While service availability overall is improving, Microsoft has made clear the situation is still volatile.

Current Status and What’s Next

As of early Tuesday, Microsoft reports that its telemetry data is showing “positive indications” and service availability is inching back toward normal. However, the company emphasized that full recovery has not yet been achieved. To ensure stability, it has entered an extended monitoring period across the remaining affected infrastructure. With most services still in flux, users may experience lingering access or performance issues.

The authentication misconfiguration remains the root cause. Microsoft continues to deploy fixes and monitor results closely. Gradual restoration is underway, particularly for Outlook’s core functions; full functionality—especially for search—is still catching up.

This outage underscores how deeply modern work ecosystems rely on single points of failure in identity and authentication systems. As cloud services proliferate, ensuring robust change management and configuration oversight becomes critical. Microsoft’s handling of this situation will serve as a case study for resilience. Watch for updates around restored service SLAs, improved incident communication, and preventive measures to avoid repeat failures.
