Rome-based startup Exein has just achieved unicorn status by securing $270 million in a new funding round led by Headline, valuing the company at $1.7 billion. The company’s core pitch: protect physical AI systems—from robots to smart appliances—by embedding defense capabilities directly into hardware and firmware. That evolution marks a shift from standard IoT security to what Exein calls “physical AI security.”
From IoT beginnings to edge AI defender
Founded in 2018, Exein initially focused on securing IoT devices through OEM and silicon vendor partnerships. In the wake of edge computing and AI inference at the device level, its strategy has broadened. Its flagship product, Photon, operates as a runtime security layer that intervenes at the kernel level of devices—aimed at stopping attacks before they can take hold. The build-out reflects growing urgency as edge AI proliferates.
Exein claims its technology now protects over 2 billion connected devices across high-stakes industries including aerospace, industrial automation, automotive manufacturing, energy, healthcare, and semiconductors. Its go-to-market model puts Exein in direct collaboration with device makers, not just as a security outsource. That lets its protections be baked in from the core, even when devices are offline, under attack, or operating independently of centralized networks.
Funding surge and scaling goals
The newly closed round is significantly oversubscribed and represents about a 30× valuation jump since its Series B funding approximately two years ago. These numbers have more than doubled since late 2025 when it combined equity and debt financing.
With fresh capital in hand, Exein plans expansion through acquisitions to fill out its product stack, and to scale its team. It is already generating about half of its revenue from the U.S. and Asia Pacific, which are key targets for continued growth. Leadership reports 400% year-over-year growth—though with multi-continent operations, maintaining consistency across geographies remains a work in progress.
Exein is also responding to elevated threats in the physical and edge space. CEO Gianni Cuozzo notes that open-source AI models, which often lack strong guardrails, are empowering attackers to launch device-level attacks at machine speed. To counter this, the company is actively working on a foundational security model for physical AI. Trained on telemetry and machine data, it aims to launch in the first quarter of 2027.
Regulatory tailwinds may also favor Exein. The European Union’s Cyber Resilience Act, whose reporting requirements just started, will come into full force in December 2027. It mandates that manufacturers ensure digital products are secure against cyber threats—both a legal pressure and a market opportunity for companies in the defensive tech space.
Exein’s trajectory—from securing billions of IoT devices to becoming a physical AI security specialist—is especially timely. As intelligence shifts to the edge and AI is embedded in more robotics, sensors, and autonomous systems, the attack surface is widening. Exein’s commitments—to deep kernel-level protection, OEM partnerships, and an AI-augmented security model—position it at the forefront of defending this next generation of intelligent, connected devices.
