Apple is reportedly planning to remove the separate Action button from its iPhones starting with the models expected in the second half of 2027. This change, based on new leaks, would merge the Action button’s functionality with the Camera Control button, creating a combined control that keeps both functions but with fewer physical buttons.
How the Combined Button Would Work
The tipster, known as Instant Digital, said that one tap on the merged button will still open the camera, as Camera Control does now, while a long press would trigger whatever function the current Action button would be assigned—for example, Focus, flashlight, Shortcuts, or Silent mode. In essence, the dedicated Action button disappears, but its features are handed off to the long-press behavior of the Camera Control.
While currently Camera Control uses a long press to launch Visual Intelligence, that feature has just been integrated into the Camera app under iOS 27 as “Siri mode,” freeing up the long-press gesture for the new hybrid setup. Apple introduced the Action button with the iPhone 15 Pro in 2023 as a versatile replacement for the ever-familiar Ring/Silent switch. Its associative power with functionalities like flashlight, focus modes, and shortcuts has given users flexibility since then.
Why It Makes Sense & What It Might Cost
The merged control approach aligns with precedents set by past devices—most notably, the iPhone Duo doesn’t have an Action button, yet retains the Camera Control feature. This suggests Apple is testing the waters for devices with fewer physical toggles. Simplifying the physical design could reduce manufacturing complexity and lessen accidental presses of buttons located near volume controls.
Rumors also point to Apple working on a simpler design for Camera Control for the upcoming iPhone 18 lineup—eliminating the capacitive sensing layer and relying purely on pressure sensing to cut costs while preserving functionality. Though one leak suggested this tweak was planned for the iPhone 18, it didn’t appear in the latest models, but the leakster indicates the combined button could debut in the 2027 lineup—possibly what Apple will mark as its 20th-anniversary iPhone series, though names like “iPhone 19 Pro” or “iPhone 20 Pro” are still floating around.
Legacy Buttons and Evolving Controls
The Action button replaced the long-standing Ring/Silent switch in 2023. With the proposed changes, the new hybrid button would retain what users have come to expect from the Action button—Silent, Focus, flashlight, shortcuts—while also consolidating that experience under the Camera Control. It’s a move that could simplify interaction patterns and reduce confusion between buttons that sit side by side.
What this means: this consolidation is likely driven by both user experience refinements and cost-saving measures. Apple seems poised to reduce the number of physical controls on future models while preserving or even enhancing their versatility.
