iPhone Fold to Drive 24% Surge in Foldable Phone Panel Shipments

The foldable smartphone market is poised for a significant rebound in 2026, with panel shipments projected to increase by 24% year-over-year, according to recent data from Counterpoint Research. This resurgence is largely attributed to Apple’s anticipated entry into the foldable phone segment with its upcoming ‘iPhone Fold.’

In the first quarter of 2026, foldable smartphone panel shipments experienced a 7% decline compared to the same period in 2025. This downturn was primarily due to inventory adjustments by brands and a reduction in new product launches. Despite this, BOE maintained its position as the leading supplier, holding a 45% share of shipments. Samsung Display followed with 22%, Visionox at 16%, TCL CSOT at 13%, and Tianma at 4%, the latter achieving a remarkable 578% year-over-year growth.

Industry insiders suggest that Samsung Display will be the exclusive provider of panels for Apple’s first foldable iPhone. This partnership is expected to bolster Samsung Display’s market presence, building on its 37% year-over-year shipment growth in Q1 2026, which increased its market share by seven percentage points.

Enze Qi, Senior Analyst at Counterpoint Research, highlighted the shift in consumer preference towards in-fold designs, stating that this form factor has transitioned from a secondary option to the mainstream. The growth of in-fold devices is driven not only by Apple’s impending launch but also by their suitability for productivity tasks, enhanced larger-screen experiences, and improved profitability.

Counterpoint Research anticipates that the latter half of 2026 will mark a period of recovery for the foldable market. If Apple and Samsung successfully introduce new products that meet user expectations, the foldable segment is expected to re-enter a growth trajectory.

Apple’s foray into the foldable market is not just a new product launch; it signifies a potential paradigm shift in smartphone design and functionality. The ‘iPhone Fold’ could set new standards for foldable devices, influencing both consumer expectations and industry trends. As Apple prepares to unveil its foldable iPhone, the tech community is keenly observing how this development will reshape the competitive landscape and drive innovation in the foldable smartphone sector.
