iPhone 18 Pro May Face Supply Constraints at Launch

As the anticipated launch of the iPhone 18 Pro approaches, reports suggest that consumers may encounter limited availability due to a shortage of DRAM components essential for the device’s production.

The iPhone 18 Pro is set to feature Apple’s A20 Pro processor, the company’s inaugural chip manufactured using TSMC’s advanced N2 process. This processor is to be integrated with DRAM through TSMC’s new Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module (WMCM) technology. While production of the A20 Pro is reportedly proceeding smoothly with satisfactory yields, the assembly process is experiencing delays. Wafers containing the A20 Pro are accumulating as they await the necessary DRAM components for packaging and subsequent steps.

Industry insiders indicate that TSMC currently holds approximately $1 billion worth of these processors in limbo, pending the arrival of DRAM. This bottleneck raises concerns about Apple’s ability to meet the initial demand for the iPhone 18 Pro. Although Apple and its manufacturing partners remain optimistic about fulfilling early orders, there is apprehension that online delivery times could extend rapidly and that physical retail stock might deplete swiftly.

The potential supply constraints are further compounded by Apple’s revised product release strategy. Unlike previous years, the standard iPhone 18 model is not expected to debut this fall; its launch has been deferred to early 2027. Similarly, the iPhone Air 2 is not slated for release this season. Consequently, the iPhone 18 Pro and the premium-priced iPhone Ultra are the primary new offerings for consumers this fall. This limited selection could intensify demand for the iPhone 18 Pro, exacerbating potential shortages.

For consumers planning to purchase the iPhone 18 Pro upon release, it would be prudent to stay informed about pre-order dates and availability updates. Given the anticipated supply challenges, acting promptly may be essential to secure the device without significant delays.
