iPhone 18 Pro Max Users on AT&T Must Get Replacement—Update Won’t Fix Issue

Apple has confirmed that some iPhone 18 Pro Max units on the AT&T network are encountering a serious problem that software alone can’t resolve. Affected phones are losing cellular service entirely, rendering calls, texts, and data unusable. While the issue appears limited in scope, thousands of complaints surfaced via the Apple Support Community and other user platforms.

What Apple Has Done So Far

To combat the disruption and prevent it from affecting more users, Apple rolled out three key updates:

  • Earlier this week, iOS 27.0.1 was released. Apple urges every iPhone 18 Pro Max user to install this update immediately.
  • A carrier settings update for AT&T was issued today. It’s scheduled to auto-install for AT&T users within the next two weeks, but can be triggered manually under Settings → General → About.

These updates aim to stem future instances of this loss-of-service issue.

Replacement Required for Affected Devices

Importantly, Apple says that devices already hit by this issue can’t be restored via software or settings updates. If the iPhone 18 Pro Max has already lost cellular connectivity, the only remedy is a complete hardware replacement. Users impacted are advised to reach out to Apple Support or AT&T, or visit an Apple Store or AT&T outlet, to arrange for replacement—free of charge.

What’s Behind the Issue?

This fault is isolated to the iPhone 18 Pro Max while using AT&T. No reports have emerged of similar problems on other iPhone models or with different carriers.

The technical root of the issue remains unknown. In the U.S., the iPhone 18 Pro Max uses Qualcomm’s Snapdragon X80 modem for cellular functions; international versions use Apple’s own C2 modem. It’s not yet clear whether the difference in modems contributes to the AT&T-only trouble.

There’s no word yet on whether Apple will launch an official service program to address this issue in the long term, though service locations seem prepared to replace affected phones under current policies.

Why It Matters: This malfunction reflects a rare failure in Apple’s hardware integration and carrier collaboration. For users, it means immediate action: install the updates—iOS 27.0.1 and the AT&T carrier settings—and check whether your phone’s cellular works. If not, expect an exchange. For Apple, this may prompt scrutiny over quality control, especially where hardware and network ecosystems intersect. Keep an eye on whether a dedicated recall or broader service initiative is announced.
