Apple’s new iPhone 18 Pro Max dramatically cuts charging time compared to its predecessor, based on a recent 0-100% speed test. A hands-on video from Xiaobai’s Tech Reviews shows the device going from empty to full in about 55 minutes with a high-capacity charger—roughly 26 minutes faster than the iPhone 17 Pro Max needed. Along the way, the 18 Pro Max hits 50% in just 15 minutes, improving from 20 minutes last year. These figures align with Apple’s official claims.
Higher peak wattage, faster charging curve
In that same test, the iPhone 18 Pro Max peaked at about 52 watts during the first 12 minutes of charging. By contrast, the iPhone 17 Pro Max (based on ChargerLAB’s testing) had a peak of around 36 watts. As expected, the charging speed tapers off as the device nears full capacity to manage heat and battery health.
To take advantage of these faster charging speeds, Apple specifies using a power adapter rated at 60W or higher with Adjustable Voltage Supply (AVS). A compatible option is Apple’s 40W Dynamic Power Adapter with 60W Max, priced at $39 in the U.S.
What this means for daily use
The practical benefits depend heavily on your charging habits. Those who regularly top up during the day stand to gain more from the faster charging curve—saving nearly half an hour in full-pairing times could be meaningful. Overnight chargers or slow-charge routines see less of a payoff.
The smaller iPhone 18 Pro model is expected to exhibit similar charging performance.
The requirement for a 60W+ AVS-capable adapter means not everyone will instantly get the full speed out of the box—and Apple’s official compatible charger costs extra.
Overall, the iPhone 18 Pro Max’s charging advances mark a clear performance leap over the 17 Pro Max. Users who often need fast turnaround charging will appreciate the upgrade; others may find it a nice but less critical improvement. As more reviews surface, watch for how battery longevity and thermal management hold up under real-world use.
