Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 introduces a new capability called iPhone Handoff, which allows two iPhones to share the same phone number and swap active use between them. But when the feature launches on September 14, 2026, it will be limited to service on T-Mobile in the U.S. and Deutsche Telekom in Germany.
How iPhone Handoff Works
To use iPhone Handoff, both iPhones need to be running iOS 27 or later. The devices must be connected to Wi-Fi and signed into the same Apple account, with FaceTime, iMessage, and Messages enabled via iCloud. When setting up during a new-iPhone setup or through Settings, you designate one device as the “main” iPhone and the other as the “secondary.”
The “main” iPhone retains managing services like Caller ID, Call Forwarding, and account settings. With the feature enabled, unlocking either device triggers the phone number to activate on that device—accompanied by a “Switched to this iPhone” message confirming the change. Wallet cards and car keys work across both phones, though some items—such as transit passes, IDs, or corporate badges—may only work on one at a time.
Limitations and Details
iPhone Handoff does not automate Apple Watch switching—it remains tied to the main iPhone. For users with dual-SIM or dual-eSIMs, the feature supports both eSIMs if the carriers for both support Handoff; both eSIMs switch together when toggling between devices. Each eSIM still requires individual setup.
Once activated, iPhone Handoff stays on until the user requests the carrier to disable it. As of now, pricing details—especially for T-Mobile customers—haven’t been announced.
This feature first appeared in Apple’s presentation and in the press release for the new foldable “iPhone Duo.” The limited carrier support at launch underscores Apple’s typically gradual rollout for network-dependent features.

What this means: While iPhone Handoff promises seamless switching between two phones under one number—useful for keeping a backup device active or dividing work and personal phones—the initial restrictions mean many users won’t benefit immediately. As Apple usually does, support will likely expand over time, but until then, only certain T-Mobile and Deutsche Telekom customers will have access.
