Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 update significantly enhances the user experience by introducing landscape mode support to a broader range of built-in iPhone applications. This expansion includes popular apps such as Apple Music, Podcasts, Fitness, Health, Reminders, Home, Shortcuts, Apple Watch, Find My, Weather, Voice Memos, and Apple TV Remote.
In the Apple Music and Podcasts apps, landscape orientation is currently available exclusively within the audio player interface. Many of these updated apps now feature a left-aligned sidebar when viewed in landscape mode, providing a more intuitive navigation experience. Notably, the Messages app, which previously supported landscape orientation, now offers the option to collapse the sidebar, displaying only names and profile pictures for a cleaner interface.
Prior to this update, landscape mode was already available in apps like Apple Maps, Calendar, Files, Notes, and Mail. The expansion in iOS 27 suggests a strategic move by Apple, potentially in preparation for the anticipated ‘iPhone Ultra,’ a rumored foldable device. Enhanced landscape support would be particularly beneficial for such a form factor, offering a more versatile user experience.
Additionally, iOS 27 introduces landscape support for Live Activities within the Dynamic Island, further enriching the interactive capabilities of the iPhone.
To utilize landscape mode in supported applications, users simply need to rotate their iPhone sideways, ensuring that the Portrait Orientation Lock is disabled in the Control Center.
Historically, landscape orientation was more prevalent in iOS. For instance, the Home Screen grid supported landscape mode on models like the iPhone 6 Plus, iPhone 6s Plus, iPhone 7 Plus, and iPhone 8 Plus. However, this functionality was discontinued with the introduction of the iPhone X.
Currently in beta, iOS 27 is expected to be officially released in September, coinciding with the anticipated unveiling of the ‘iPhone Ultra.’
