iOS 27.3 Beta Brings Apple Intelligence Features to China Using Alibaba’s Qwen AI

With the release of the iOS 27.3 beta, Apple is finally enabling Apple Intelligence in China. This marks the first time many of the advanced AI-powered features, including enhanced Siri tools and visual intelligence, will reach Chinese users. Developers in China can activate these functions in the beta version of iOS 27.3. The update is expected to roll out publicly in December. Â

What’s New: Features that Just Arrived

Major Apple Intelligence tools now working in China leverage Alibaba’s Qwen model for key capabilities, due to both partnership with Alibaba and regulatory approvals. Users now have access to:

  • Live Translation integrated in Messages, FaceTime, and the Phone app — also works with newer AirPods models (AirPods 4 with ANC and AirPods Pro 2+). Â
  • Writing Tools for text rewriting, proofreading, summarization, and Qwen-enabled text generation.Â
  • Visual Intelligence for recognizing objects, places, etc.; plus a clean-up tool in Photos to remove unwanted items.Â
  • Genmoji for custom emojis, natural-language search, and the ability to generate “memory movies” in Photos.Â
  • Email enhancements: summaries, smart reply suggestions, and priority email sorting.Â
  • Notification summaries, urgent alerts, and a “Reduce Interruptions” Focus mode.Â
  • Audio summaries in Notes, call transcriptions saved into Notes via the Phone app, more natural Siri responses, and “Type to Siri” support.Â

However, some elements of Apple Intelligence are still missing. Siri AI (the enhanced conversational assistant), the dedicated Siri app, and certain newer capabilities introduced with iOS 27 are not yet available in China. Â

How We Got Here

When Apple first rolled out Apple Intelligence in the U.S. with iOS 18.1, China was left out of the early launch. Legal and regulatory hurdles required a different path. Apple’s partnership with Alibaba and approval from Chinese authorities cleared the way for Apple Intelligence to operate via Alibaba’s Qwen model. This collaboration enables certain AI-features that meet China’s regulatory rules without bringing in full U.S.-based AI systems.Â

The features are currently rolling out in the developer beta of iOS 27.3, with a public beta expected soon. A wide launch is anticipated in December once testing and approvals are complete. Â

China’s Apple Intelligence vs. Global Version: Differences to Note

Apple’s China version of Intelligence via iOS 27.3 beta omits some of the newer tools available in versions of iOS 27 elsewhere. Absent features include the revamped Siri AI, the standalone Siri app, and other advanced functionalities introduced globally with iOS 27. Users in China will start with a subset of what the broader Apple Intelligence platform offers.Â

Still, the features being included—like live translation, AI tools in messaging, visual object recognition, and smarter note-taking—are a substantial leap forward for users there. They align with Apple’s global push toward embedded intelligence in everyday tasks. Â

iOS 27.3 is shaping up to be a significant update. For users in China who want early access, once Apple opens the public beta, these tools will become available on compatible devices. Timing is expected to be December for full rollout of the update. Â

What this means in the bigger picture: delivering AI tools in China via a major local partner is a strong sign of Apple’s strategy under regulatory pressures. Observers should watch how feature gaps—like the missing Siri AI app—get addressed over time, and whether performance and privacy meet local expectations. The Apple-Alibaba cooperation may set a model for how international tech firms introduce generative AI under regulatory regimes in large markets.
