Apple has added a long-awaited feature to its new HomePod mini 2: the ability to set it as the default speaker for Macs that support Wi-Fi 6E or newer. That means if you own a compatible Mac, the HomePod mini 2 can now replace your built-in speakers for system audio, notifications, alerts, video, music—everything. And if you’ve got two, you can use them together for stereo output.
Previously, older HomePod mini models could play Mac audio via AirPlay, but couldn’t be designated as the default sound output. Users had to manually choose the HomePod mini each time through AirPlay—which could introduce lag or latency, especially for system audio and video sync.
Why Wi-Fi 6E Is the Gatekeeper
The new capability is limited to Macs that include Wi-Fi 6E or a newer wireless standard. That restriction appears tied to network performance: older wireless tech may fail to deliver the low latency needed for seamless audio, particularly when dealing with system sounds, video playback, or alerts.
The original HomePod mini lacks Wi-Fi 6E support, which likely explains why it can’t be set as a default speaker despite being usable through AirPlay. Even though AirPlay works for music and streaming, its delay can become noticeable when used for system audio.
What this Means for Users
If your Mac has Wi-Fi 6E or newer, the HomePod mini 2 becomes a much more integrated audio solution—no more jumping into sound settings every time you want full-system output routed to your HomePod. For audiophiles or those who track video or gaming, stereo pairs make this even more compelling.
Owners of Macs without Wi-Fi 6E or with older HomePod minis might feel left out—these devices will continue relying on AirPlay, with its inherent latency and the need to manually pick output. There’s no indication from Apple of software updates enabling the older HomePod mini to gain this capability.
This move aligns with Apple’s trend of increasing seamlessness between devices: Wired speakers gradually fading out as wireless and smart audio takes over. It gives more weight to the decision to build Wi-Fi 6E into not just Macs, but every music and speaker device, for buyers who care about low latency and system-wide integration. With this change, HomePod mini 2 becomes not just a smart speaker, but a true core component of the Mac experience.
