This feature utilizes subtle lighting and color on the back of the device to notify users of important activities when the phone is placed face down.
Initially, ‘Pixel Glow’ was identified in the Android 17 Beta 4 release, where it was described as a hardware capability that employs gentle light and color to inform users about significant events. Specific functionalities include displaying subtle lights when favorite contacts call and providing visual feedback during hands-free interactions with Google’s AI assistant, Gemini.
Recent teasers from Google have showcased the ‘HiLight’ feature positioned alongside the flashlight within the Pixel 11 Pro’s camera bar. The lighting effect is capable of displaying a full spectrum of colors, with a rotating pattern reminiscent of the Mac pinwheel.
The rebranding to ‘HiLight’ was revealed by Dylan Roussel, who noted that the feature’s name is a playful combination of ‘Hi’ and ‘Light,’ emphasizing its role in highlighting important notifications and interactions.
It remains to be seen whether third-party applications will have access to the ‘HiLight’ functionality or if it will be exclusive to Google’s native apps.
