Google has announced a significant expansion of its AI-powered ‘Ask Maps’ feature, now rolling out to over 150 countries and territories, including Australia, Brazil, Canada, Indonesia, Japan, and Mexico. This global launch introduces several enhancements designed to provide users with more personalized and efficient navigation experiences.
One of the key updates is the integration of Personal Intelligence, allowing ‘Ask Maps’ to access information from users’ Gmail accounts. This enables the feature to consider upcoming flights or dinner reservations when offering suggestions. For instance, a user can inquire, “Give me ideas on how to spend a few hours near the hotel before my flight tomorrow,” and receive tailored recommendations based on their hotel reservation details found in Gmail. To utilize this functionality, users must manually enable Personal Intelligence within ‘Ask Maps,’ with support for Google Calendar and other applications expected in the near future.
Additionally, ‘Ask Maps’ now retains conversation history, allowing users to revisit previous interactions. By asking, “Remind me, what activities did you suggest for my trip to Seattle?” the feature will retrieve past recommendations, streamlining the planning process without the need to start anew.
Enhancements also include real-time transit information for various modes of transportation such as buses, trains, subways, and ferries. Users can pose questions like, “Is there a ferry to get to Taronga Zoo with views of the Opera House?” and receive up-to-date schedules and potential delays, effectively serving as a virtual departure board within the chat interface.
Furthermore, ‘Ask Maps’ has introduced agentic capabilities to handle complex, multi-step tasks. Users can now place food orders by stating, “Order spicy pad kee mao with seafood for me to pick up on my way home.” The feature will identify open restaurants along the user’s route, consider saved preferences, and accommodate dietary needs. After selecting a restaurant, ‘Ask Maps’ will add the specified dish to the cart for finalization. This service currently supports Square and Toast platforms, with Uber Eats integration anticipated soon.
The feature also facilitates hotel bookings and event discovery. For example, a user can request, “For next week’s conference in downtown Miami, find me a decently priced, top-rated hotel with an artsy vibe, within walking distance from a gym and restaurants.” ‘Ask Maps’ will compare prices, check availability, and provide suitable options based on the specified criteria.
In the Contribute tab, users can now suggest edits conversationally. By stating, “More parking is available behind the building,” they can update location details. Additionally, users can upload photos of storefront signs, and ‘Ask Maps’ will detect new information, such as updated operating hours, and prompt for confirmation before submitting the changes.
These enhancements are currently rolling out in the United States, with plans for broader availability in the coming months.
