Google Wallet Adds Notification Feed and New Digital Passports

Google Wallet is getting two noteworthy upgrades. A new notification feed is rolling out, and additional countries can now add passports to the app as digital “ID passes.” Both features are arriving through server-side updates — meaning users may not see them yet, but they are on the way.

Notification Feed: Updates Made Easy

A notification bell icon has appeared at the top right of Google Wallet’s homepage, next to the profile switcher. When tapped, it opens a feed showing “updates about items in Wallet,” enabling users to get alerts — for example, when a card’s status changes or an item needs attention. This tool is part of what the company describes as an “in-app message center,” and it is being delivered gradually rather than through app updates.

Digital Passports Expand to More Countries

Wallet’s support for digital passports — which are handled as “ID passes” in the app — is widening. After already being available in Brazil, Singapore, Taiwan, the UK, and the US, two more countries have joined: Ireland and Italy. The rollout isn’t universal yet; many users in those countries may have to wait for the feature to arrive on their devices.

To use a digital passport, users open Google Wallet, tap the plus (+) button at the bottom, navigate to “IDs & personal info,” then “ID pass.” They’ll need to scan their passport’s info page and its embedded security chip, and then submit a video of their face. Once the verification process completes, a notification informs the user.

Why This Matters

Digital passports in Wallet allow for secure identity verification via NFC or QR code scanning. In the United States, this means faster processing at TSA checkpoints. The addition of Ireland and Italy underscores Google’s push to make Wallet a global identity tool, not just for payments or tickets, but as a trusted means of carrying official documents.

Meanwhile, the notification feed aims to improve Wallet’s usability. Instead of missing critical updates about items stored in Wallet — such as expired IDs or unread alerts — users will have a centralized place to monitor them.

These updates mark a shift toward Google Wallet becoming more than just a digital wallet: it’s growing into a hub for personal identity and important notifications. As more countries join in, ID pass support could transform international travel and local identity systems alike. What to watch: how governments handle regulatory and privacy concerns, whether more nations are added rapidly, and how well the notification feed scales as Wallet stores more types of passes.
