Google Releases Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 for Pixel Devices

Google has rolled out Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 for Pixel devices, marking a rare Friday release. This update addresses several issues and introduces new security measures.

Key fixes in this release include resolving visual corruption and unexpected device restarts when opening the notification shade and Quick Settings menu. Additionally, the Device Health and Support tool has been corrected to prevent false battery capacity degradation warnings.

A significant enhancement in Beta 3 is the implementation of stricter security restrictions on programmatic call forwarding to protect users from potential fraud. The sendUssdRequest() API now requires more than just the CALL_PHONE permission to access call-forwarding codes. Apps attempting to execute these codes in the background will be blocked and receive a USSD_ERROR_NOT_ALLOWED callback. Furthermore, users manually dialing call-forwarding codes will encounter a new system-level confirmation dialog before the command is executed. Non-call forwarding USSD requests, such as those for mobile money transfers and account checks, remain unaffected by this change.

For developers, it’s crucial to ensure that applications handle the USSD_ERROR_NOT_ALLOWED failure callback gracefully. Apps requiring call-forwarding setup should migrate to using the ACTION_DIAL intent to pre-fill the dialer, allowing users to manually confirm the action.

Android 17 QPR2 Beta 3 system images are available for a range of Pixel devices, including the Pixel 6a, Pixel 7 series, Pixel Tablet, Pixel Fold, Pixel 8 series, Pixel 9 series, Pixel 10 series, and Pixel 10a, as well as the Android Emulator. Users can join the Android Beta Program to receive the update over-the-air.

As Android continues to evolve, these updates not only enhance device stability but also reinforce security measures to protect users from emerging threats. The introduction of stricter controls on call forwarding underscores the importance of proactive security in the mobile ecosystem.
