Google is reportedly developing a new ‘Photo Shuffle’ feature for its Pixel smartphones, allowing users to automatically cycle through their favorite wallpapers. This functionality was discovered in the latest Android 17 QPR1 beta release, though it remains inactive by default.
Currently, Pixel devices offer limited options for dynamic wallpapers. Users can select from Google’s predefined collections, which can change daily, but there’s no support for personal photo albums. In contrast, other Android manufacturers like Samsung and Oppo, as well as Apple’s iPhone, have long provided more flexible wallpaper customization, enabling users to set their own images to rotate at specified intervals.
The upcoming ‘Photo Shuffle’ feature aims to bridge this gap. Users will be able to create albums featuring their favorite people and pets, which will then automatically refresh as wallpapers. The feature is expected to offer various refresh intervals, including hourly, daily, at sunrise and sunset, or upon user interaction, such as tapping the screen or unlocking the device.
While the feature is not yet live, its presence in the beta code suggests that Google is actively working on enhancing personalization options for Pixel users. This development aligns with Google’s recent efforts to expand customization features, such as the introduction of AI-generated wallpapers and special effects in previous updates.
By incorporating this feature, Google not only catches up with competitors but also provides Pixel users with a more personalized and dynamic user experience. As the feature is still in development, it’s unclear when it will be officially released. However, its inclusion in the beta indicates that Google is committed to offering more robust customization options in future updates.
