Google has unveiled a new feature allowing users to regain access to their accounts through a selfie video. This method serves as an additional recovery option alongside existing methods like email addresses and phone numbers, particularly useful when users are locked out or lack access to their usual devices.
To set up this feature, users record a short video by looking into their device’s camera and performing guided head movements to capture their face from various angles. If access issues arise later, users can take another selfie video, which will be compared to the original to verify identity and restore account access.
Google emphasizes that this feature is entirely optional and under user control. Users can delete their selfie video from their account at any time. The feature is designed to assist in account recovery, unlock additional services by verifying user identity, and enable the creation of avatars for AI-generated content that resembles the user.
However, this option is not available for Google Workspace accounts, child accounts, or accounts enrolled in the Advanced Protection Program. Additionally, users cannot add a selfie video during the account recovery process or while locked out.
In cases where users cannot sign in, they may be prompted to record a short video of their face. This new video is then compared to the previously saved selfie video. If the faces match, the user’s identity is confirmed, and account access is restored. Google advises updating the saved selfie video if there are significant changes to one’s facial appearance.
The selfie videos are stored in encrypted format and used solely for account recovery purposes unless users opt to share them for other uses. This data can aid in developing and improving facial recognition, age estimation, and other verification methods that utilize physical features or movements. Users can manage this setting by navigating to the Selfie Video page in their Google Account and toggling the ‘Improve Google services’ option on or off.
This development underscores Google’s ongoing efforts to enhance account security and user convenience. By integrating biometric verification methods like selfie videos, Google aims to provide a more secure and user-friendly approach to account recovery, reducing reliance on traditional methods that may be less accessible in certain situations.
