Google Drive has expanded its capabilities by integrating Gemini AI features into its Android and iOS applications. This enhancement introduces two key functionalities: ‘Ask Gemini’ and ‘AI Overviews,’ designed to streamline user interaction and information retrieval within the app.
Ask Gemini: Interactive AI Assistance
The ‘Ask Gemini’ feature introduces an AI-powered side panel accessible via the search bar in Google Drive. Users can engage in multi-turn conversations to explore and comprehend content across Drive, other Workspace applications, and the web. This functionality allows for dedicated discussions about specific files and folders, providing precise and actionable answers. Additionally, it maintains a persistent conversation history, enabling users to revisit previous insights without restarting the dialogue. Importantly, ‘Ask Gemini’ is integrated directly into Drive’s architecture, ensuring that it adheres to existing data protection and security controls, including access permissions and data loss prevention policies.
AI Overviews: Enhanced Search Capabilities
The search bar within Google Drive has been upgraded with ‘AI Overviews,’ offering instant answers at the top of search results. This feature generates summaries by extracting information from multiple files, eliminating the need to open each one individually. Users can pose natural language questions, such as “What’s in our Spring 2026 catalog?”, and receive accurate responses tailored to their queries. If further information is required, users can seamlessly transition from a quick summary to a more in-depth conversation with ‘Ask Gemini.’ Additionally, AI Overview search settings allow users to control which Google Workspace applications Gemini accesses to generate these overviews.
These features are rolling out in English and 28 additional languages over the coming weeks. They are available to Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers, as well as users on Business Standard and Plus, Enterprise Standard and Plus, and Google AI Pro for Education plans.
