Google DeepMind Invests $75M in A24 to Develop AI Tools for Filmmaking

Google DeepMind has announced a $75 million investment in independent film studio A24, marking the tech giant’s first equity stake in a film production company. This partnership aims to develop artificial intelligence (AI) tools tailored for the filmmaking process, with a focus on enhancing production and distribution capabilities.

A24, renowned for critically acclaimed films such as “Everything Everywhere All At Once” and “Marty Supreme,” has seen its revenue more than double over the past two years. This growth is attributed to increased film budgets and expansion into areas like unscripted television, music, and theater. The studio’s recent successes include the blockbuster “Backrooms,” further solidifying its position in the industry.

The collaboration between Google DeepMind and A24 is structured as a multiyear, non-exclusive agreement. Notably, the deal explicitly excludes A24’s existing film and television library, as well as its content data, from being used to train AI models. Scott Belsky, a partner at A24 overseeing technological innovation, emphasized that the AI tools developed through this partnership will differ from traditional AI-generated content.
