Spirit Airlines, a low-cost carrier in the United States, ceased operations earlier this year amid escalating fuel costs exacerbated by geopolitical tensions. The airline’s closure led to bankruptcy proceedings, during which its assets were auctioned off. Google emerged as a notable bidder, securing a significant portion of Spirit’s data assets.
The acquired dataset encompasses a wide array of information, including operational metrics, business strategies, and software code. Notably, it contains hundreds of millions of Microsoft Teams chats and over 100 million emails. Additionally, the data includes insights into revenue streams, aircraft operations, employee productivity, audits, and fraud detection mechanisms. A court document further detailed that the dataset comprises information on marketing campaigns, human resources, strategic planning, project management, pricing data from over 7 billion competitor flights, approximately 7.5 billion passenger transaction records spanning nearly two decades, and more than 30 million lines of code.

The company stated that all personally identifiable information (PII) will be meticulously removed by a third-party service before the data is integrated into its systems.
