Gizmo’s AI-Powered Learning App Surpasses 13 Million Users and Secures $22 Million in Series A Funding
Since its inception in 2021, Gizmo, an AI-driven educational platform, has revolutionized the way students engage with their study materials. By transforming traditional notes into interactive quizzes and flashcards, Gizmo has captivated a global audience, amassing over 13 million users across more than 120 countries. This remarkable growth is a significant leap from the 300,000 users reported in 2023.
In a recent development, Gizmo announced the successful closure of a $22 million Series A funding round. The investment was spearheaded by Shine Capital, with notable contributions from Ada Ventures, Seek Investments, GSV, and NFX, the latter having previously led Gizmo’s $3.5 million seed round. This influx of capital is earmarked for expanding Gizmo’s engineering and AI teams and strengthening its foothold in the U.S. college market. The company, which operated with a lean team of seven employees prior to this funding, plans to scale up to approximately 30 staff members, as stated by CEO Petros Christodoulou.
Gizmo’s ascent comes at a pivotal time when educational performance in the United States is facing challenges. The 2025 National Assessment of Educational Progress highlighted a historic decline in academic achievements. Factors such as increased screen time and diminished attention spans have been identified as contributing elements to this downturn. In response, Gizmo has embraced gamification as a strategy to enhance student engagement.
The platform incorporates game-like features, including leaderboards, daily streaks, limited daily lives for incorrect answers, and the ability to challenge friends. These elements are designed to make learning more engaging and to encourage consistent use among teenagers and young adults. This approach aligns with the strategies of other micro-learning platforms like Anki, Quizlet, and newer entrants such as Yuno and Knowt, all of which aim to transform screen time into productive learning experiences.
Gizmo’s rapid growth and substantial user base underscore its effectiveness and appeal in the edtech landscape. The recent funding not only validates the platform’s innovative approach but also positions it for further expansion and impact in the educational sector.
