Google’s recent implementation of compute-based usage limits for its Gemini AI service has sparked frustration among users. These new limits, which consider factors such as prompt complexity, feature usage, and chat length, have replaced the previous daily prompt caps. Limits now refresh every five hours until the weekly cap is reached.
According to 9to5Google, the free tier remains available, but paid subscriptions have undergone significant changes. The $7.99/month AI Plus plan offers double the usage limits of the free tier, while the $19.99/month AI Pro plan quadruples them. Higher-tier plans, AI Ultra at $100 and $200 per month, provide five and twenty times the Pro plan’s limits, respectively.
Google communicated these changes via email, stating: “Usage limits in the Gemini app: For the Gemini app, we’re introducing compute-based usage limits that factor in the complexity of your prompt, the features you use, and the length of your chat. Your limit refreshes every 5 hours until you reach your weekly limit. As an AI Pro subscriber, you’ll enjoy a 4x higher usage limit than non-subscribers.”
Users have expressed dissatisfaction with the new structure. Some are concerned about the value proposition, noting that the AI Pro plan offers less usage per dollar compared to the AI Plus plan. Others are troubled by the stricter limits, reflecting a broader industry trend of tightening access to AI resources.
As AI services expand, the demand for computational resources increases, leading companies like Google to implement usage restrictions. While these measures aim to manage resource allocation effectively, they also highlight the challenges of scaling AI services to meet growing user needs.
