Google has enhanced its Gemini for Mac application by introducing a voice mode that allows users to interact with the AI assistant through natural speech. By holding down the Function (Fn) key, users can now dictate commands or text from any window on their desktop.
This new feature offers intelligent dictation capabilities, enabling users to speak naturally while Gemini transcribes their words into text. The system is designed to filter out filler words like “um” and “ah,” and it can recognize and adjust for mid-sentence corrections, ensuring that the transcribed text is accurate and polished.
Additionally, Gemini has introduced an optional screen-aware reasoning mode. When activated, this mode allows the AI to interpret and interact with the content displayed on the user’s screen. Users can select files, images, text, or documents, and Gemini can perform tasks such as editing, summarizing, or composing content directly within the application in use. This functionality extends to generating and editing images, providing a versatile tool for content creation and management.
The activation method for Gemini’s voice mode—a long press of the Fn key—mirrors the shortcut used for macOS’s built-in dictation feature. This design choice ensures a seamless transition for users familiar with the existing dictation shortcut, enhancing the overall user experience.
Currently, the voice mode is available globally to all Gemini for Mac users in English, with plans to support additional languages in future updates.
