Google’s latest Pixel 11 series introduces Gboard’s Rambler, a voice typing feature that shifts from real-time transcription to a prompt-based approach. This change aims to enhance the accuracy and coherence of transcribed text by capturing the user’s intent more effectively.
To activate Rambler, users tap the microphone icon in Gboard, now marked with Gemini’s spark symbol. Once engaged, Rambler displays a waveform across the suggestion strip, indicating it’s ready to record. After speaking, users must tap a checkmark to conclude the session, at which point the transcription is processed. Unlike previous versions, Rambler does not provide live text previews during dictation, aligning more with a conversational interaction with the Gemini app.
This method allows Rambler to filter out filler words and run-on sentences, producing cleaner transcriptions. Users can also instruct Gboard to modify the text’s style, expand content, or incorporate emojis. For further customization, Rambler can utilize terms from the user’s Personal Dictionary to improve output quality.
While this prompt-based system may require an adjustment period, it offers potential benefits in text transformation and editing capabilities. For those preferring the traditional real-time transcription, Gboard settings provide an option to revert to the previous speech-to-text system labeled “Standard.”
Rambler’s introduction reflects Google’s ongoing efforts to integrate advanced AI features into its devices, aiming to provide users with more intuitive and efficient tools for communication.
