FBI Constructs Replica Town to Train for Cyberattacks

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has unveiled a 22,000-square-foot replica town at its Huntsville, Alabama campus, designed to train law enforcement personnel in simulating and investigating real-world cyberattacks. This initiative aims to provide hands-on experience with the latest consumer and enterprise technologies frequently targeted by malicious hackers.

Dubbed the Kinetic Cyber Range, the facility opened in February 2025 and features fully furnished structures, including houses, a hotel, a gas station, a grocery store, a courthouse, a hospital, and a power company. Complete with roads and traffic lights, the town mirrors a typical U.S. community. Since its inauguration, over 1,400 students, comprising FBI personnel and partners from other federal and local agencies, have undergone training at the facility.

Each component of the town is equipped with functioning devices and systems that operate as they would in a real-world setting, ensuring that simulated attacks remain contained within the facility. The range also includes a data center housing more than 200 physical servers running various operating systems, reflecting the diverse corporate environments investigators may encounter during breach responses or search warrant executions.

The Kinetic Cyber Range enables the FBI to simulate ransomware attacks and their real-world consequences, such as the critical decisions investigators must make when responding to incidents that could jeopardize public safety, like hospital systems going offline. Additionally, the facility aids in training U.S. investigators in digital forensics, equipping them with the skills to extract data from modern devices for criminal investigations.

Given the escalating frequency and sophistication of cyberattacks, the FBI’s investment in such a comprehensive training environment underscores the importance of preparedness in safeguarding critical infrastructure and public safety. This proactive approach is essential in developing the expertise required to counteract evolving cyber threats effectively.
