Three former Spotify engineers—Sidd Motwani, Ian Anderson, and Shivaditya Sinha—have secured $10 million in seed funding for their startup, Malachyte. The company aims to transform e-commerce by implementing advanced AI-driven recommendation systems.
At Spotify, the trio developed Vector AI, a behavioral intelligence system that predicts user intent and actions, powering approximately 90% of the platform’s recommendations for its 800 million users. Now, they plan to apply similar technology to online retail.
Malachyte’s platform focuses on real-time, intent-aware shopping experiences. Unlike traditional e-commerce personalization, which relies heavily on historical data and demographic segmentation, Malachyte’s system interprets user behavior as it happens. This approach allows for dynamic adjustments to product recommendations based on immediate user actions.
For instance, if a shopper searches for ‘heavy-duty boot’ and clicks on steel-toed options, the platform will prioritize related items like work pants and gloves, while deprioritizing unrelated products such as dress shoes. This real-time adaptation occurs without the need for user accounts or prior purchase history.
Motwani emphasizes that retailers already possess valuable customer data through user interactions like clicks, searches, and add-to-cart actions. However, many fail to utilize this information in real time. Malachyte’s system continuously processes these signals, refining user profiles and enhancing the shopping experience with each interaction.
Additionally, the platform considers contextual factors. For example, a user browsing on a phone late at night may have different intentions than the same user shopping on a laptop during the day. Recognizing these nuances allows for more personalized and effective recommendations.
Since its inception in 2024, Malachyte has collaborated with over 20 enterprise clients across various sectors, including travel, grocery, and retail. The platform launched with Fun.com in the fall of 2025 and became available to Shopify merchants through a native integration in June 2026. Larger retailers can integrate the technology via API.
Looking forward, Malachyte aims to unify merchandising and marketing strategies by leveraging a comprehensive understanding of customer behavior. The recent funding round was co-led by Bessemer Venture Partners and Gradient, with participation from Harpoon Ventures.
By introducing real-time, intent-aware AI to e-commerce, Malachyte addresses a significant gap in online retail personalization. This innovation has the potential to enhance customer satisfaction and drive sales by delivering more relevant product recommendations. As the platform expands, it will be interesting to observe how traditional retailers adapt to this technology and how it influences consumer shopping habits.
