Designer Eugene Whang Reveals Five-Year Journey Behind AirPods Max Development

Unveiling the AirPods Max: Insights from Designer Eugene Whang

Eugene Whang, a seasoned hardware designer with a 22-year tenure at Apple, recently shared an in-depth look into the development of the AirPods Max during an interview with Highsnobiety. Whang’s journey at Apple began with a bold move; he reached out directly to a designer he identified from the company’s directory, seeking mentorship. This proactive approach led to his significant contributions to iconic products such as the iPod nano, iPhone, and AirPods.

The creation of the AirPods Max was a meticulous process spanning five years. The design team approached the project as if they were developing three distinct products: the headband, the case, and the ear cushions. The ear cushions presented a particular challenge due to the vast diversity in human head and ear shapes. To ensure a universal fit, the team explored hundreds and hundreds of variations, striving to accommodate the unique contours of each user.

A notable design decision was the absence of Apple’s logo on the AirPods Max. Whang explained that the team deliberately chose not to brand your head, emphasizing a minimalist aesthetic that allows the product’s design and functionality to speak for themselves.

Throughout his career at Apple, Whang observed the company’s evolution from a renegade innovator to a dominant force in the global economy. He highlighted the protective role of Jony Ive, Apple’s former Chief Design Officer, who shielded the design team from external pressures, allowing them to focus on creativity and innovation. Whang noted, Jony shielded us from a lot of it. He had to take a lot of hits for being in that position.

After leaving Apple, Whang joined LoveFrom, a design firm founded by Jony Ive and Marc Newson. However, following personal reflections after his mother’s passing, he decided to step away from the firm to reassess his professional and personal priorities.

The interview with Highsnobiety offers a rare glimpse into the intricate design processes at Apple and the philosophies that drive their product development. It also features photographs of other Apple products Whang contributed to, along with sketches of an undisclosed hardware project, providing further insight into his design journey.
