Anthropic has expanded Claude’s voice mode to include support for its more advanced Opus and Sonnet models. Previously, this feature was limited to the Haiku model, known for its speed and simplicity.
With voice mode, users can engage in spoken conversations with Claude, eliminating the need for typing prompts and reading responses. According to Anthropic’s support documentation, the model used in voice mode now aligns with the user’s subscription plan, initiating conversations with the model last selected in text chat.
Users have the flexibility to switch between Claude’s models during a conversation and can seamlessly transition between text and voice inputs without losing context.
Additionally, Claude’s voice mode now integrates with tools such as Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Docs, and Slack. This allows Claude to perform tasks like checking a calendar or summarizing an email thread audibly. Free account holders can connect one tool, while paid plans offer support for multiple integrations.
This enhancement distinguishes Claude’s voice mode from OpenAI’s ChatGPT, which, despite its real-time voice capabilities, lacks the ability to utilize different tools within the same conversation.
Earlier this year, Claude’s voice mode expanded its language support beyond English, introducing beta support for French, German, Hindi, Indonesian, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish. Users need to manually select their preferred language within the app.
Voice mode is accessible on iOS, Android, desktop, and web platforms, though Anthropic notes that it is optimized for mobile devices. Voice interactions count toward standard usage limits, and the latest Fable model is not yet supported in voice mode.
Meanwhile, OpenAI is reportedly developing a real-time voice mode for its Codex agent. App strings uncovered by TestingCatalog suggest features like checking Slack, browsing, and ordering food, managed by background agents. However, this functionality remains in testing, with no confirmed release date.
By integrating voice capabilities with its more powerful models and expanding tool support, Anthropic is enhancing the versatility and user experience of Claude. This development reflects a broader trend in AI towards more natural and interactive user interfaces, positioning Claude as a competitive option in the evolving landscape of conversational AI.
