Bookshop.org, a platform dedicated to supporting independent bookstores, has announced plans to integrate with Kobo e-readers by the end of this year. This development aims to provide readers with an alternative to purchasing e-books from major retailers like Amazon.
Historically, Kobo e-readers were associated with independent bookstores through a system where customers could create Kobo accounts via bookstore websites. However, this method has become outdated, and many local bookstores no longer offer this option, leaving Kobo users without a direct way to support their favorite local shops when purchasing e-books.
In response, Bookshop.org, which launched its e-book platform in early 2025, has been working to bridge this gap. Initially, the integration with Kobo was slated for 2025 but faced delays due to business negotiations and technical challenges, particularly concerning digital rights management (DRM) requirements set by publishers. Andy Hunter, founder and CEO of Bookshop.org, stated that both parties are committed to making this integration happen and have recently finalized business terms. While a specific launch date has not been set, the goal is to roll out support later this year.
Currently, Bookshop.org offers e-books through its mobile applications for iOS and Android devices. The forthcoming integration with Kobo will enable users to purchase e-books directly from Bookshop.org and read them on their Kobo devices, thereby supporting local bookstores with each purchase.
For Kobo users seeking alternatives in the meantime, options include accessing DRM-free e-books compatible with Kobo devices and borrowing e-books from libraries via OverDrive. Additionally, Android-based e-ink devices that support the Google Play Store, such as Boox or Meebook, can download the Bookshop.org app, allowing users to read e-books purchased through the platform.
This integration represents a significant step in providing readers with more choices to support independent bookstores in the digital age. By expanding compatibility to include Kobo e-readers, Bookshop.org is enhancing its mission to bolster local bookshops and offer consumers alternatives to dominant e-book retailers.
