Bluesky, the decentralized social network, has unveiled a new group chat feature, marking a strategic pivot towards enhancing community interactions within its platform. This development aims to provide users with more intimate spaces for discussion, distinguishing Bluesky from larger competitors like X.
In its latest update (v1.124), Bluesky introduces group chats accommodating up to 50 participants. This feature empowers users to create and manage private conversations, offering control over participant inclusion through customizable invite links. Users can also set preferences regarding who can invite them to group chats, with options ranging from everyone to only followed accounts or no one at all. Notably, the current iteration does not support media sharing within group chats, as Bluesky is prioritizing the implementation of robust safety and moderation systems before introducing such capabilities.
This move aligns with Bluesky’s broader strategy to foster community-centric features. Alex Benzer, Bluesky’s head of product, highlighted the platform’s vision to create smaller, focused spaces within the larger network where users can engage deeply with like-minded individuals. This approach contrasts with the broader public audience model, aiming to cultivate more meaningful interactions.
Bluesky’s journey began with an invite-only phase in February 2023, transitioning to public access by February 2024. The platform has since experienced significant growth, boasting over 44 million registered users as of May 2026. Despite this expansion, Bluesky’s user base remains smaller compared to industry giants like X, which reports 600 million monthly active users. To differentiate itself, Bluesky has been proactive in introducing features that emphasize user privacy and community engagement. For instance, in December 2025, the platform launched a privacy-focused ‘Find Friends’ feature, enabling users to connect without compromising their personal data. Additionally, in February 2026, Bluesky integrated Germ Network’s technology to offer end-to-end encrypted messaging directly within its app.
Looking ahead, Bluesky plans to introduce Reddit-style communities, allowing users to create and join spaces dedicated to specific topics of interest. Each community will have a unique handle serving as its URL, providing a customized landing page. Community owners will have the flexibility to enhance their spaces with additional features using tools compatible with the AT Protocol, the open-source framework underpinning Bluesky.
By focusing on community-driven features, Bluesky aims to carve out a niche in the social media landscape, offering users a decentralized platform that prioritizes privacy, user control, and meaningful engagement. This strategic direction not only differentiates Bluesky from its competitors but also addresses the growing demand for more personalized and secure online interactions.
