Bluecore Energy Secures $50M Seed to Power Floating Nuclear Plants

Just months after emerging from stealth, nuclear startup Bluecore Energy has locked in a $50 million seed round to scale up its vision for floating nuclear power plants. This comes on the heels of a $10 million pre-seed round earlier in the year. The new capital was raised in a swift, eight-week process and heavily supported by existing backers as well as fresh names. Silverton Partners led the funding.

Floating SMRs: Flexible nuclear power

Founded earlier this year by Kofi Asante, Bluecore Energy is building small modular reactors (SMRs) mounted on floating barges instead of being fixed to land. The goal is to supply clean electricity to ports, nearby infrastructure, and communities — wherever they most need it. The company’s first two floating barges have already launched from Bluecore Energy’s base at the Port of Long Beach.

By mounting reactors on water, the company aims to avoid needing entirely new land-based infrastructure, enabling quicker deployment and relocation as demand shifts. Bluecore Energy has secured strong partnerships with federal bodies, including the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Maritime Division, the Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), and the U.S. Coast Guard, all of which are involved in reviewing the design for certification.

Backing and challenges

Investors from Bluecore’s pre-seed round, such as Slauson & Co., Harlem Capital, and Ripple co-founder Chris Larsen, doubled down this time. New contributors include Collab Capital, Hartbeat Ventures, and angel investors tied to Tesla, Uber, Amazon, and Google.

The fresh funds are earmarked for product development, regulatory compliance, nuclear fuel acquisition, and expanding the team. One of the biggest hurdles ahead will be securing supply-chain components to build the barges, reactors, and supporting infrastructure fast enough to match interest. So far, potential clients include ports, AI data centers, and communities seeking clean energy and water.

Bluecore is also preparing to order nuclear fuel through its collaboration with a national nuclear lab, a sign it’s moving rapidly toward operational capability.

This approach is also part of Bluecore’s broader mission: to democratize access to clean energy. The startup frames energy (and water) as human rights, stressing that clean power should be available even in places lacking conventional grid infrastructure.

What to watch

Regulatory certification will be a milestone. If the NRC and Coast Guard approve Bluecore’s floating reactor design, it would pave the way for commercial deployment. The speed of securing nuclear fuel supply chains and managing safety will also be critical. Interest from ports, data centers, and underserved communities points to a market hungry for clean, portable energy solutions. How Bluecore scales and competes with land-based SMRs will also define its long-term viability.
