Asahi Linux Poised to Support M3 Chips, M4 & M5 in Development

The Asahi Linux team is on the cusp of a major release: full support for Apple’s M3 series chips is nearly ready. Alongside this, work is actively underway for the next generation—M4 and M5 chips—though they’re still months away from being usable. This marks a significant leap for the open-source project that enables Linux to run natively on Apple’s ARM-based silicon.

M3 Support Reaches Release Stage

In a recent update, the developers shared that the M3 support effort has matured considerably since initial demonstrations earlier this year. Although a semi-functioning version for M3 traces back to January, the current build is far more stable and well-prepared for public release. The Asahi team expects to officially “cut” the release in the coming weeks.

Specific hardware compatibility issues have been addressed: the webcam image signal processor has largely carried over from the M2 series, though with tweaks to solve a skipped initialization error that appeared on the M3 Max. Microphones faced a similar hurdle—a “High Frequency” decimator required fresh setup coefficients—and another initialization message needed correction. USB3, DisplayPort, and Thunderbolt connectivity through USB-C ports also required attention. Finally, the commonly used ACE2 controller in base M3 models gave way to ACE3 in M3 Pro and Max, prompting significant reverse engineering work.

One popular macOS feature—matching GPU and display controller firmware ABI—also saw updates to align with the latest macOS release. Every component touched in these fixes brings Asahi Linux closer to robust M3 compatibility.

M4 & M5: Futures in Flux

M4 and M5 support remains under development. Among the reported challenges are compatibility with Apple’s updated NVMe controller firmware in macOS 15 builds and a WFI (Wait For Interrupt) issue—an essential component for CPU power states. These affect both M4 chips and preliminary M5 work, making it hard for users to test or use these versions reliably just yet.

Progress has been made in key areas: fixes to PCIe support allow Linux to properly recognize devices on that interface, and a bug that caused crashes during boot when multiple CPU cores were enabled has been addressed. Still, despite these advances, the project is not ready to ship usable builds for M4 or M5 at this stage.

The Asahi Linux project’s mission has been to unlock Linux running natively—and fully—for Apple Silicon. Each Apple chip generation introduces new hardware features, firmware changes, and architectural shifts, which demand painstaking reverse engineering. The impending M3 release underscores both how far the community has come and how demanding the road ahead with M4 and M5 will be.

For users, the arrival of official M3 support means that Macs with M3-series chips will soon enjoy better Linux compatibility, more stable drivers, and performance improvements. Those eyeing the newer M4 or future chipsets will need patience, as the project works through firmware alignment, hardware initialization bugs, and core system behavior.
