After more than ten years, Aptoide, a prominent alternative app store, has re-entered the U.S. market via Google Play. This development follows recent changes in Google’s policies, allowing third-party app stores to be listed on its platform.
Aptoide, based in Portugal, offers a vast selection of over 40,000 Android applications and serves approximately 25 million monthly active users. Historically, U.S. users could only access Aptoide by sideloading it onto their devices, a process that limited its adoption due to the extra steps involved and potential security concerns.
The catalyst for this change was a ruling by U.S. District Judge James Donato in the Epic Games lawsuit against Google. The court mandated that Google permit the installation of third-party apps from outside the Play Store. In response, as of June 22, 2026, Google introduced the Play Catalog Access Program, granting third-party app stores access to its app catalog while maintaining their independence.
The legal battle began in 2020 when Epic Games accused Google of anticompetitive practices within the Android ecosystem. A jury sided with Epic in 2023, and despite Google’s appeal, the ruling was upheld. Consequently, Google announced plans to eliminate Play Store commissions and simplify the process for Android users to install alternative app stores.
Aptoide’s return to Google Play signifies a notable shift in the app distribution landscape. For consumers, it offers more choices and potentially better deals, while developers gain additional platforms to showcase their applications. This move could encourage further innovation and competition within the app marketplace, benefiting the entire Android ecosystem.
