Apple has announced that its upcoming film, ‘Tenzing,’ will have a limited theatrical release on October 9, 2026, before becoming available for streaming on Apple TV on October 16. This marks Apple’s first theatrical release of the year, following a series of direct-to-streaming films.
‘Tenzing’ tells the true story of Tenzing Norgay, portrayed by Genden Phuntsok, a Himalayan climber who, alongside New Zealand mountaineer Edmund Hillary (played by Tom Hiddleston), became one of the first to summit Mount Everest. The film also features Thinley Lhamo as Tenzing’s wife, Dawa, CaitrĂona Balfe as expedition secretary Jill Henderson, and Willem Dafoe as Colonel John Hunt. Directed by Jennifer Peedom, the narrative explores the cultural and personal dynamics between the climbers and the challenges they faced during their historic ascent.
The decision to release ‘Tenzing’ in theaters aligns with the Academy Awards’ requirement for a film to have a theatrical run of at least seven consecutive days to be eligible for consideration. This strategy suggests that Apple views ‘Tenzing’ as a potential contender for the upcoming awards season.
In addition to ‘Tenzing,’ Apple TV has a lineup of upcoming films, including the comedy ‘The Dink’ premiering next month, the Ryan Reynolds spy thriller ‘Mayday’ set for September, and titles like ‘Matchbox’ and ‘Way of the Warrior Kid’ slated for later in the fall.
Apple’s approach to ‘Tenzing’ reflects a strategic balance between theatrical releases and streaming availability, aiming to meet award eligibility criteria while catering to its streaming audience. This move indicates Apple’s continued investment in high-quality, award-worthy content and its commitment to diverse distribution strategies.
