Apple has introduced an updated iPad mini that earns the distinction of being its first model rated for water resistance. Carrying an IP67 rating, this iPad mini can withstand exposure to water and dust, a feature often requested by users of the compact iPad line. The IP67 status confirms protection against immersion in water up to one meter deep for up to 30 minutes under controlled conditions. “Splash, water, and dust resistance” is qualified by Apple as not permanent, with wear and tear leading to decreased effectiveness. Water damage remains outside warranty coverage, and users are advised against charging the device while wet.
Acoustic Display and Sealed Design
One major innovation helping enable the new water resistance is the “Acoustic Display” audio system. Apple pairs custom woofers integrated through the display with hidden tweeters positioned between the glass and aluminum enclosure. This sealed design aids in meeting IP67 requirements while also boosting bass and overall volume.
What Changes, What’s New, and What’s the Cost
While IP67 makes the new iPad mini unique in Apple’s lineup, other core specs and the look remain in line with recent iPad minis. The protection makes it more resilient for outdoor or poolside use. Users still need to take care of the chassis over time to maintain performance.
The updated model starts at a price of US $699. Pre-orders will open on Wednesday, October 28, with availability beginning Friday, November 6.
Adding water resistance to the iPad mini marks a milestone in the evolution of Apple’s tablet line. Previously, only the iPhone and Apple Watch models carried official IP water protection. The acoustic sealing and design adjustments suggest Apple is increasingly treating its smaller iPads not just as portability-focused tablets, but as devices meant for more rugged real-world use.
What to watch: How well the water resistance holds up under daily use will likely influence whether this feature appears in future iPads too. Also important will be whether real-world buyers find that the audio enhancements—thanks to the Acoustic Display system—deliver noticeably richer sound in damp or exposed environments.
