Historically, Apple has been working on a camera-equipped AirPods model under the code name “B798.” This version was initially slated for a 2026 release but faced delays, pushing its expected launch to 2027. However, a parallel project, code-named “B790,” has been progressing concurrently. This isn’t uncommon for Apple, as the company often develops multiple iterations of a product internally to explore different design and functionality avenues. Notably, components of the B790 model have been identified in the iOS 27 codebase, indicating that this version is closer to production readiness and may be released ahead of schedule.
The primary function of the cameras in these AirPods isn’t to capture photos or videos for user consumption. Instead, they are designed to provide Siri with a real-time view of the user’s surroundings. This integration aims to enhance Siri’s capabilities by offering contextual awareness, allowing for more intuitive and responsive interactions.
