Apple to Close Three U.S. Retail Stores, Citing Changing Shopping Center Dynamics

Apple Announces Closure of Three U.S. Retail Stores Amid Changing Market Dynamics

Apple Inc. has officially confirmed the permanent closure of three of its retail stores in the United States, citing evolving conditions in the shopping centers where these stores are located. The affected locations are:

– Apple Trumbull in Trumbull, Connecticut, closing on June 20, 2026, at 9 p.m.
– Apple North County in Escondido, California, closing on June 20, 2026, at 9 p.m.
– Apple Towson Town Center in Towson, Maryland, closing on June 20, 2026, at 8 p.m.

The decision follows a comprehensive evaluation of the long-term viability of these malls, which have experienced a decline in retailer presence and overall mall conditions in recent years.

Impact on Employees

Apple has outlined plans to support its employees during this transition. Staff members at the Trumbull and North County locations will have the opportunity to continue their roles at nearby Apple retail stores. Employees at the Towson Town Center store, which made history in 2022 as the first unionized Apple Store in the U.S., will be eligible to apply for open positions within the company in accordance with their collective bargaining agreement.

The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM), representing the Towson employees, has expressed strong opposition to the closure. The union has raised concerns about the potential impact on workers and the local community, emphasizing the store’s significance as a unionized location.

Apple’s Retail Strategy

Despite these closures, Apple remains committed to its retail presence and customer engagement. Over the past year, the company has opened 11 new stores worldwide and has undertaken upgrades or relocations of 14 existing locations. In the United States, Apple has inaugurated two new stores and completed enhancements at eight others, reflecting its ongoing investment in the retail sector.
