Apple is laying out the numbers behind its bold claim that the Apple Watch Series 12 — along with the Apple Watch Ultra 4 — now offers “the most accurate heart rate sensing in a wearable.” The company released a new study comparing its updated Health Sensing System to rival wearables and smart rings. Each wore a Series 12 on one wrist and a competing wrist-based device on the other, while a Polar H10 chest strap provided the reference or “ground truth.” Competitors included the Garmin Forerunner 970, Google Pixel Watch 4, Huawei Watch 5, Samsung Galaxy Watch 8, and WHOOP 5. An Oura Ring 5 was also used for finger-based comparison.

Scenarios ranged from intense workouts — outdoor runs, treadmill intervals, HIIT, and strength training — to everyday situations like resting, desk work, cooking, walking. Tests included challenging conditions: wrist motion, shifting heart rates, and problems like the so-called “cadence lock,” where optical sensors misread runners’ rhythmic wrist movements.

Results: How Series 12 Performed

Series 12 outperformed every competing device overall, across the full suite of workouts and daily living. Out of 159 separate activity-oriented comparisons, Apple Watch showed statistically superior accuracy in 139 cases. The results suggest substantial gains over both wrist wearables and smart rings in most conditions tested.
