Apple Pilots ‘Live Notes’ AI to Transcribe Genius Bar Sessions

Apple is currently testing a new artificial intelligence system called ‘Live Notes’ in select retail locations. This system is designed to record and transcribe interactions between customers and Genius Bar staff, aiming to streamline the support process.

The ‘Live Notes’ system allows Apple Store employees to record their sessions with customers using an AI tool that transcribes and summarizes the conversations. These transcripts are then stored in Apple’s internal Genius Bar system, enabling employees to concentrate more on customer service rather than manual note-taking.

Participation in the ‘Live Notes’ program requires consent from both the employee and the customer before any recording takes place. Despite this opt-in approach, some Apple retail employees have expressed concerns about potential future uses of these recordings, such as their application in performance evaluations or coaching. However, Apple has indicated that the actual recordings will not be retained, managers will not have access to the transcripts, and employees can edit both the transcript and summary before they are saved internally.

Currently, the ‘Live Notes’ system is not mandatory, and it remains uncertain whether Apple plans to expand its implementation to more stores, make it a compulsory practice, or alter how the transcripts are utilized.

This initiative reflects Apple’s ongoing efforts to integrate AI technologies into its services to enhance efficiency and customer experience. By automating the documentation of support sessions, Apple aims to improve service quality and consistency. However, the success of such implementations will depend on addressing employee concerns and ensuring that the use of AI aligns with both staff and customer expectations.
