Apple is reportedly developing new Apple Pencil models slated for release in spring 2027, alongside updated iPad Pro devices. These forthcoming styluses are expected to incorporate user-replaceable batteries, aligning with upcoming European Union regulations.
Currently, Apple Pencils are designed with integrated batteries that are not user-serviceable. The first-generation model charges via a Lightning connector, while the second-generation version attaches magnetically to the iPad for wireless charging. However, once the battery’s health declines, replacing it is not feasible, often necessitating the purchase of a new stylus.
The anticipated design change is in response to the EU Batteries Regulation, specifically Article 11, which mandates that portable batteries be easily removable and replaceable by users throughout the product’s lifespan. This regulation, enacted in 2023, will become legally binding in February 2027. While primarily targeting smartphones, the law also encompasses accessories such as styluses, keyboards, mice, and headphones.
Apple’s compliance with this regulation may extend beyond the Apple Pencil. For instance, the company’s Self Service Repair program already allows users to replace iPhone batteries, potentially meeting the new requirements. However, products like AirPods present a more complex challenge due to their compact design, making user-replaceable batteries less straightforward.
Introducing user-replaceable batteries in the Apple Pencil signifies a notable shift in Apple’s design philosophy, emphasizing sustainability and user empowerment. This move could set a precedent for other tech accessories, encouraging manufacturers to adopt more repairable and environmentally friendly designs.
