Apple has officially unveiled the M5 Ultra, claiming it as the most powerful M-series chip yet.
What’s Inside the M5 Ultra
The M5 Ultra is constructed by linking two M5 Max dies using Apple’s next-generation UltraFusion interconnect. It’s the first time the company has achieved a quad-die architecture in its M-series lineup, delivering more than 4.4 TB/s of inter-die bandwidth and over six times the connection density compared to previous designs. This lets the four dies operate like a single, seamless processor.
On the CPU side, the chip packs up to 36 cores—12 high-performance (“super”) cores and 24 performance cores. Apple says this configuration brings up to 1.25× gains in single-threaded tasks and about 1.3× improvements in multi-threaded workloads relative to the M3 Ultra.
The GPU can scale up to 80 cores, with a notable upgrade: each core now includes a Neural Accelerator, a first for Ultra-class chips. These shifts contribute to up to 4.3× higher peak AI compute power and roughly 1.8× faster graphics compared to its predecessor, the M3 Ultra.
AI, Media, Memory: What’s Upgraded
The M5 Ultra integrates a 32-core Neural Engine and features a more advanced Media Engine with twice the video encode and decode blocks found in the M5 Max. This allows for playing up to 33 simultaneous streams of 8K ProRes 422 video at 30 fps.
Memory support rises to 512 GB of unified memory, and memory bandwidth jumps to 1.2 TB/s—about a 50 % boost over the M3 Ultra. Apple stresses that these enhancements are tailored for demanding workloads, letting users handle large datasets locally, ramp up tokens per second, and run massive language models entirely on device.
Availability & Configuration
The M5 Ultra is exclusive to Apple’s next Mac Studio model. Pre-orders begin today, with shipping starting September 22. Machines configured with the full 512 GB memory option are expected to ship in late October.
