Apple has recently adjusted the pricing of its refurbished Mac and iPad products, following earlier increases in the prices of new devices. This move reflects the company’s response to escalating component costs, particularly in memory and storage, driven by heightened demand from AI data centers.
For refurbished Macs, price hikes range from approximately $160 to $330. For instance, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with an M4 Pro chip saw its price rise from $1,699 to $1,779, while the Nano-texture version increased from $1,829 to $1,909. Higher-end models experienced more significant jumps; a 14-inch MacBook Pro with the M5 chip escalated from $1,359 to $1,439, and the top configuration in that category surged from $2,629 to $3,309. Additionally, a 14-inch MacBook Pro equipped with the M2 Max chip climbed from $4,249 to $4,839.
Refurbished iPads also underwent price adjustments, albeit more consistently. Many models increased by about $120 to $150. For example, the 10th-generation iPad Wi-Fi with 256GB storage rose from $339 to $409. The iPad mini 6 saw its price go from $379 to $459, and from $449 to $529, depending on the configuration. Higher-end iPad Pro models experienced larger increases, ranging from $230 to $250.
These adjustments align with Apple’s broader pricing strategy, which has been influenced by the rising costs of memory and storage components. The surge in demand from AI data centers has led to a shortage of these components, impacting the entire electronics industry. Apple had previously attempted to absorb these costs but has now passed them on to consumers to maintain its profit margins.
It’s noteworthy that many refurbished units likely contain original memory, storage, and logic boards, or service parts acquired before the recent spike in component costs. Therefore, the price increases appear to be more about aligning with Apple’s updated pricing structure rather than reflecting the actual cost of each refurbished device.
For consumers, this development underscores the broader challenges facing the tech industry due to supply chain constraints and increased demand for components. Those considering purchasing refurbished Apple products may want to act promptly, as further price adjustments could occur if component costs continue to rise.
