Anthropic Unveils Claude Sonnet 5: Enhanced Performance at Lower Cost

Anthropic has introduced Claude Sonnet 5, a new AI model that significantly narrows the performance gap between the more affordable Sonnet series and the premium Opus models. This latest release is designed to offer advanced capabilities at a reduced cost, making high-level AI functionalities more accessible to a broader audience.

Claude Sonnet 5 stands out as Anthropic’s most agentic Sonnet model to date. It excels in planning, utilizing tools such as web browsers and command-line terminals, and operating autonomously. While Opus models have traditionally led in agentic capabilities, their higher price points have been a barrier for some users. Sonnet 5 addresses this by delivering comparable performance to Opus 4.8, with notable improvements over its predecessor, Sonnet 4.6, in areas like reasoning, tool usage, coding, and knowledge-based tasks.

One of the key enhancements in Sonnet 5 is its ability to complete complex tasks that earlier Sonnet versions struggled with. It now autonomously verifies its outputs, reducing the likelihood of errors. Additionally, the model demonstrates a heightened ability to decline malicious requests and exhibits lower instances of hallucinations and sycophantic responses, contributing to more reliable and trustworthy interactions.

Anthropic has made Sonnet 5 available across all subscription plans, setting it as the default model for both Free and Pro tiers. To encourage adoption, the company has introduced promotional pricing: $2 per million input tokens and $10 per million output tokens, valid through August 31. After this period, the rates will adjust to $3 and $15, respectively.
